Awesome article! Does he have anything else published? I did a quick google search but didn't come up with much...I'd love to read more if it is out there. Reminds me of a book I read a while back called 'Iron John,' about the absence of ritual in our modern-day lives, and the negative effect that has had, specifically (in this particular book) on men. Great read - thanks!
In answer to John Michael: This is my only publication on ultras and running. It developed out of a Sociology of Religion class I taught at Sonoma State University. My other published work appears mostly in sociology journals, on topics like news media, politics, and the environment.
But I heartily recommend reading Leslie Jamison's excellent essay, "The immortal horizon," on the Barkley Marathons. It's first-rate. http://www.believermag.com/issues/201105/?read=article_jamison
Nice - thanks! Just found this race report that touches on the aspects of community and pain: http://trailmonsterrunning.com/733/barkley-marathons-race-report-2011
