An appeal from the mountains

OK, I admit it, I am trying to prepare for the arrival of the snow and the closing of all of the sweet singletrack around here. Now I know that nobody out there really feels too sorry for me living here in Sun Valley but it is tough for a trail runner to get through the winter when April rolls around and there's still three feet of snow in my yard.

So, this quick post is an appeal to those of you who live in warmer, year-round, dirt places. Any chance any would-be race organizers from year-round dirt places might be interested in organizing an event or two to take place, say, on the Sunday of MLK weekend or the Sunday of President's weekend? This would allow those of us from the snow bound mountains to pack the family into the car on Saturday, drive to the dirt, run on Sunday, and then drive back on Monday.

Think about it. A few enterprising race directors out there could boost their fields this way! And, selfishly, it would get me on dirt once in January and once in February. Every little bit helps!

AJW, how about packing your bags and coming to New Zealand? I am organizing a trail 50-miler for March next year. It will be drop-dead incredibly scenic.

Cheers, Paul Charteris

When does the trash talking begin for WS 09? Who is going to win and why? I need something to motivate me to train.

Andy,

I know we are on the other coast, but the VHTRC hosts an awesome weekend of running on MLK weekend. On Saturday, it's a 25-30 mile run on the northern section of Massanutten Mountain 100 trails and then on Sunday it's 26 miles on the southern section. The VHTRC knows how to put on fully supported and totally FUN training runs so please join us! Plus, it would be a great way for the mountain and west coast folks to see the MMT100 course. More details can be found on the calendar of the VHTRC website: www.vhtrc.org

Hi, Andy. I don't know about Kerby's future kick-butt racing, but for this particular post - we'll be putting a couple more trail runs, so will use your suggestions for dates.

Andy,

I second the suggestion to participate in the Moab 50k on presidents day weekend. Really strong field of runners. Check out the results from last year. http://www.mas50.com/redhot/X50.pdf

This race filled last year so if you want to do it don't wait too long to register.

I like the idea of the Moab 50K. Any chance the organizers could be talked in to moving it to Sunday?
