100 Mile Course Record Poll

The poll results to the right suggest that most readers think that if any 100 mile CR's are broken this year it will be at the Big Dance. So, now, the follow up question for discussion is, who will break what CR?

Are we talking men's CR, women's CR, masters CR (for either gender), or even 50 and over CR (which I, personally, think could go down this year if conditions are benign.)

Comments? Critiques?

Men's CR. Tony, Kilian, and Geoff in that order.

That Kilian dude is looking good. I do like to see a new record set on the "proper" course.

And those who are wondering about single year age records, they are kept on RealEndurance.Com, under the Records tab in WS page.

AJW has the fastest time for 37 and 39...

It is amazing how little respect you people have for Jurek, These people can't even show up. Until his record is broken talk is cheap.

Depends on the snow. Hal was about 30-40 min slow the last 2 years with course conditions labeled "best ever" by the RD. Those trail work guys are doing a great job out there. Sure it was hot, but that's always a factor. The current Mens CR is on the course without Duncan Canyon. So, to beat that time is going to take a real special day by someone. If there is snow, I don't see it happening. If the conditions are like last year, it will probably be broken. I think the women's record is safe.

I agree with Connor, but I also have to throw Hal in there. You need only look at the last 2 WS to see what kind of competitor Hal really is. He'll save all his reserves and bring the whole arsenal in order to 3-peat. Love Hal's humble, yet tenacious competitive spirit.

I think we're already building up to the "best western states field ever."

I would like to think that we all just want to see a competitive race that might produce a CR. But heat IS an enormous factor and more significant than any course maintenance.

2004 was a long time ago, but Killian is already "looking good."

Can't wait.

A close race after Foresthill would be pretty exciting this time around, I guess Hal's got to quit hammering everyone in the canyons.

Hal's point about heat being a major factor is extremely important when considering course records and general outcomes at WS. During the last two unseasonably hot years at WS, 1995 and 2006 (over 100 degrees official temp in Auburn both days and over 115 in El Dorado Canyon on race day) the finishing percentage was 53% and the finishing times, particularly those of experienced WS runners, were vastly different than they were in more benign years. They weren't necessarily slower, just different implying that many of the typical variables in measuring success at WS go out the window in hot years.

Heat is too much of a factor here. I like how the pressure is mounting already, that'll play a part as well. Let's make sure Killian doesn't cut any switchbacks. :-)

Well there could be a course record at WS...My odds would be on Mr. El NINO being a major player on any record attempt..Latest forecast through FEB is some massive snow dumps in the Sierras...Postholing can slow down the best..Looking forward to whatever the day brings...Tony

Connor, How can Tony win when he isn't even in the field?
