During the last two unseasonably hot years at WS, 1995 and 2006 (over 100 degrees official temp in Auburn both days and over 115 in El Dorado Canyon on race day) the finishing percentage was 53% and the finishing times, particularly those of experienced WS runners, were vastly different than they were in more benign years. They weren't necessarily slower, just different implying that many of the typical variables in measuring success at WS go out the window in hot years.AJWhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04387120797582582699noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1899309861714342259.post-69435266936007547452010-01-14T10:41:24.055-08:002010-01-14T10:41:24.055-08:00Hal's point about heat being a major factor is...Hal's point about heat being a major factor is extremely important when considering course records and general outcomes at WS. You need only look at the last 2 WS to see what kind of competitor Hal really is. He'll save all his reserves and bring the whole arsenal in order to 3-peat. Those trail work guys are doing a great job out there. Sure it was hot, but that's always a factor. The current Mens CR is on the course without Duncan Canyon. So, to beat that time is going to take a real special day by someone. If there is snow, I don't see it happening. If the conditions are like last year, it will probably be broken.
